Tristan Kaye, Master of Professional Accounting

Online study suits global career

Tristan Kaye

Tristan Kaye has used his business qualifications from UniSA to forge an international consulting career. Fresh from graduating with a UniSA Masters in Professional Accounting in 2012, he moved to London to undertake his MBA at the London Business School, which he is due to complete this year. He will then head to New York where he has secured new role with an international brand consulting firm.

After graduating from his first UniSA degree, a Bachelor of Business (International Business) in 2004, Kaye moved to Canberra to work for the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, when he recognised the need for further education to continue his career progression. He wasn’t about to be held back by his shifting location. He saw taking on a postgraduate study as the next logical step for his career, but had to make sure his study needs could be accommodated.

‘The UniSA Business School immediately came to mind when I was considering further study. External study was the only option for me at the time, so I had to carefully consider my options. I compared a number of universities based on their approach to external education and the UniSA Business School appeared the strongest to me,’ says Kaye.

Now a graduate of the Master of Professional Accounting, Kaye worked as he studied and found that he was able to put his new knowledge and skills to work immediately.

‘To me, there seemed to be a stronger practitioner focus to the material,’ says Kaye. ‘The program was contemporary, and where theoretical constructs were discussed it was always brought back to the professional realm. I felt confident that I was able to study something on Sunday and use it at work on Monday.’

Beyond learning the knowledge and skills of a new profession, Kaye found that his postgraduate study experience gave him the confidence to take charge of his future.

‘The Master of Professional Accounting reignited my interest in lifelong learning. Just as I was completing the program I took up the challenge of a new role—this entailed moving cities, changing functions and changing industries (as senior consultant on a major Southeast Asian LNG project for Brisbane consulting firm Keogh Consulting)! I think a big element of this decision was influenced by my study, as it reinforced what I was capable of and gave me the confidence to step up. The skills I acquired throughout my studies enabled me to actively influence a number of aspects of the management of the firm I went into. I’m now studying an MBA in London and am due to start a new role in brand consulting in New York City. Some radical leaps, but it all started during my postgraduate study at the UniSA Business School.’

The UniSA Business School’s Master of Professional Accounting program provides students with the specialised knowledge and business skills necessary to perform as a professional accountant, in Australia or overseas. Dr Mei Lim, Program Director, knows exactly what her students need to make a career for themselves as a professional accountant.

‘We need to make sure that the knowledge students take in into their career will meet the dynamic needs of industry. Our close working links with professional bodies such as CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA) keep the program relevant and applicable,’ says Dr Lim.
