Internships pay off for new graduates

In 2013 a pilot Graduate Internship Scheme was established by the University of South Australia Career Services with the intention of breaking the soul destroying cycle of ‘No experience: no job. No Job: no experience'.

The scheme offers new graduates an opportunity to secure three to six months of paid experience in a professional role aligned to their degree or professional sector. It has surpassed expectations, according to Catherine Klimeš, UniSA Career Services Manager.

“Opportunities have been provided by employers working in all the major sectors, both locally and internationally.”

By the end of July this year, 100 internships had been arranged involving local and international graduates from both undergraduate and postgraduate programs across a wide range of disciplines in the arts, design, business, engineering and  IT.

“The Pilot concluded last December with discussions about opportunities for 2014. This year’s scheme turned out to be a mix of both existing clients and many new and diverse clients offering exciting, and in some cases very different, types of internships. We very much hope that 2015 will continue to mirror this pattern,” Catherine said.

Here are interviews from three graduates who have successfully completed their internships.
