VC and Downer greet UniSA alumni in London

The Vice Chancellor with His Excellency Alexander Downer AC DUniv, High Commissioner for Australia
More than 90 graduates, friends and leaders of the University of South Australia converged on Australia House in London on 28 May for an alumni cocktail reception, generously hosted by His Excellency the Honourable Alexander Downer AC – marking his first official appearance as Australian High Commissioner to the UK.
Mr Downer has agreed to serve as UK Patron of South Australia Universities Alumni Europe (SAUAE) and recently made a generous donation of private papers to the UniSA Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Library.

The reception was also the first Chapter event for Professor David Lloyd, Vice Chancellor and President of UniSA, who spoke to those gathered about the University’s ongoing developments in Adelaide’s west end and inspired them with insights into the University’s future plans.

Professor Lloyd was accompanied by Deputy Vice Chancellor Nigel Relph, SAUAE Chapter President Dennis Muirhead, and eight Committee members.

Other special guests included Professor Malcolm Gillies AM, Vice Chancellor of the London Metropolitan University; Ken Smith, Agent-General for Queensland; and Meredith Hooper, 2014 Australian of the Year in the UK.

Chapter President Dennis Muirhead, who also delivered an entertaining speech, was pleased by the alumni response to the event.

“I think it was a very successful reception and very well attended, and the Chapter looks forward to regular visits by the Vice Chancellor and academic staff in the years to come,” Mr Muirhead said.

“These events strengthen the relationship between the University and alumni. They also enable alumni to meet each other at a beautiful venue in the heart of London.”

SAUAE will return to Australia House on July 10 for its Mid-Summer Quiz Night. Tickets are still available, with part proceeds going to The Spinal Research Foundation.
