Lead by example - Become a mentor

Since its inception six years ago the UniSA Business Career Mentor Program has grown from strength to strength and last year registered its largest cohort to date, with a total of 200 mentor/mentee pairs. Having access to the wisdom of experienced professionals has opened doors for many, like final year Marketing student Victoria Jaeger, who secured work placements with Network 10 and top media agency, MEC.

The Program matches students and recent graduates (within the past three years) with experienced business professionals in mostly one-to-one relationships to enhance employability and leadership skills.

We have mentors and mentees based locally, nationally and internationally, and facilitate face-to-face as well as online mentoring relationships.

Gary Jaffer, Founder and Principal Consultant of equilibrium9 has been mentoring with the Program since 2013.

“The UniSA Business Career Mentor Program is a truly remarkable initiative that is evident by the continued growth in the students and mentors participating. So often the gap between academic rigor and business acumen is extenuated during the period between a student graduating and getting work in their industry of choice and this program is a direct effort to bridge that gap. By coupling students with people with industry experience the student has an opportunity to receive handy industry insights but also to tap into their mentor’s business network.” says Gary.

Gary’s mentee for 2015, Victoria Jaeger, is in the final year of her Marketing degree.

“This experience has been the most valuable aspect of my degree to date. Stretching outside the realm of academia, becoming a mentee opened my eyes to a world abundant in opportunities, business networks and professional individuals sharing a common passion for commerce and innovation. Gary and I have a common interest in the nature of humanity, philosophy and of course, marketing. He introduced me to his industry contacts which resulted in work placement opportunities with Network 10 and MEC. With Gary’s assistance, I have discovered how to fine-tune my career goals and I am now creating measurable steps to achieve them,” says Victoria.

“I have been fortunate enough to mentor highly motivated and enquiring students,” says Gary. “The level of their motivation and enthusiasm for their chosen discipline, along with the drive and initiative they have brought to our regular meetings, have led to them gaining valuable work experience in the industry, which will put them in good stead for graduate employment.”
