Intellectual Property: What you actually need to know

This is your opportunity to learn more about intellectual property. University of South Australia’s Innovation and Collaboration Centre (ICC) is presenting a practical hands-on introduction to intellectual property aimed at businesses and researchers. UniSA alumni will receive significant discounts on tickets.

Dr Justin Coombs, General Manager of the CRC for Cell Therapy Manufacturing and a registered patent attorney, will present the core concepts of intellectual property (IP) including disclosure, novelty, inventive step and utility. He will use real world examples to introduce the different types of intellectual property and show people how to identify it in a product. Dr Coombs will show participants what to look for in a patent specification as well as some practical advice on claims drafting.

Topics covered include:

  • types of IP and identification of IP in a product
  • patents and how to read a patent specification
  • core legal concepts of patents: disclosure, novelty, inventive step and utility
  • international patent prosecution
  • claims drafting including practical exercise

About the presenter
Dr Justin Coombs is a registered patent and trademarks attorney with over 10 years’ experience. He has worked with two of the top patent attorney firms in Australia (Davies Collison Cave then Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick) where he established a substantial practice focusing on the biotechnology sector. More recently he has held senior management positions in the biotechnology industry and he is the current General Manager of the CRC for Cell Therapy Manufacturing.
