Current potential research project

Utilisation of solar and wind energy for large scale water pumping and pumped storage

  1. Supervisors: Prof. Wasim Saman
  2. Area: Mechanical Engineering, Sustainable Energy
  3. Abstract: The last years have witnessed an expansion of wind power generation. The intermittent nature of the renewable electricity being currently generated and mismatch with the demand profile are already leading to reduced capacity factors. With the anticipated growth of wind (and solar) energy generation to achieve the state and national renewable energy targets, this situation is getting more critical. More grid capacity and energy storage are necessary to facilitate better utilization of future wind capacity. In Australia, we also have considerable water storage capacities. We also use considerable electrical energy for pumping water to regional cities and mining operation sites. The project will investigate case studies for utilising the excess renewable generation in water pumping and pumped storage.
