Architecture
and Ecology is a third year
course within the undergraduate degree
for
Architecture (Bachelor of Architectural Studies).
The course introduces students
to advanced methods for the manipulation of environmental
conditions in buildings. Students:
- identify and describe the relationship between the natural and built environment from several different philosophical perspectives
- produce a workable and ecologically viable proposal integrating the passive and active environmental control systems for a new or adapted building.
Specific
environmental systems considered include passive thermal design and
ventilation, water conservation and recycling
methods, alternative energy supply, energy conservation in building
procurement and management, and daylighting analysis.
Architecture and Ecology is taught in partnership with the course Design Studio (all year levels), encouraging students to test their design proposals in progress. Students use the 3D computer-based environmental modelling program Ecotect.
