Coffin Bay masterclass

In
addition to core courses offered within
Architecture programs of study, students
can
explore environmental aspects of design through the School
of Art, Architecture and Design's multidisciplinary masterclasses.
For the Coffin Bay masterclass, 25 students travelled to the remote town of Coffin Bay with architect Paul Pholeros for a 5-day design exercise. The project involved the design of a low-energy house on previously cropped land in the early stages of revegetation.
Students gathered measurable and sensory site information to
produce scale models which were then assessed for thermal performance using
data logging equipment.
The project was an intense educational experience, challenging students' understanding of place, environmental conditions and energy systems
in a real-life situation with a real-life practitioner.
