Two
Towers Project
The Two Towers Project for Architectural Design Studio 10 (within the Master of Architecture) explored the ghostly effects of twin programs in Adelaide and Melbourne.
Students researched the idea of architectural 'hauntings' with respect to issues of conservation, heritage, program and urban identity. The idea for this project came from a competition for crisis accommodation using seemingly unusable portions of public land - giving marginal members of society a clear architectural identity.
Composing Dublin: Contesting the capsular city
The
Design Studio designed
an urban strategy and mixed-use development for the Dublin Docklands
precinct, Ireland. The brief was based on the
Landmark
Tower/U2 Studio Competition for Dublin's Canal
Dock with an additional brief for an International School of Contemporary
Music (ISCM).
The competition brief called for landmark proposals and development that would provide a 'beacon' for future investment. The government's planning authority was keen to promote Dublin as a centre of trade and culture in the new European Union. The international profile of the popular Irish band U2 increased the marketability of associated developments and tourist potential.
For this project, the Design Studio considered:
-
the
manner in which the musical overlays of the
program on the Dockland site interacted
with and affected
the image-ability + cultural identity that arose
from these programmatic inclusions - the possibility of architectural projects to convey identity or develop cultural specificity in the light of debate on critical regionalism.
A key theme was the experience of contemporary city space, and the effects of mobility and consumption.
