Collaboration between the School of
Art, Architecture and Design and the
University of South Australia Student Association led to students being
involved in the design of a community housing development to meet
the needs of both able bodied and disabled students. The project extended
over two years and involved both state and local government funding as well
as external sponsorships. Over 50
architecture and
interior architecture students
participated in the project through case study workshops,
and the design of lighting and
glass tiling.
Six units, carparks, circulation and landscaping were required within a limited inner-city site area. Explorations of concepts were particularly challenging due to:
- a high proportion of the site being required for two single-storey wheelchair accessible units
- the community imperative requiring ground-level access to all units.
The design is conscious of its context in location and time. It has responded to the rich and eclectic urban fabric by providing a richness of form, material and colour - employing lightweight durable and flexible materials under broad-rimmed roofs.
'Smack bang in the centre of the CBD stands a structure made of timber and tin. For wheelies and walkers, quiet ones and talkers. People who pass by stop and stare even gape and gawk at how wonderful it is. It is unique. Not built to a mould or shaped to a formula. It is odd, outrageous and absolutely outstanding and we wouldn't move for quids.' - Quentin Kenihan, resident
