Vessels from Nature
The relationship between experience, memory and nature has always been an inherent part of my ceramic practice. This interest originated from a childhood event, when arriving in Australia from Holland and experiencing the sheer size and grandeur of the Blue Mountains. I was overwhelmed by the smell, colour and shapes, something I had never encountered before. It was a sublime experience. Since then, I regularly withdraw to nature for solitude, peace, inspiration, meditation and spiritual renewal.
The body of work Vessels from Nature is a personal reflection with reference to the Blue Mountains. The work details the variety and quantity of splendour found in the environment; by marrying the range of organic colours with form, the pieces explore, reveal and highlight nature's diverse beauty. To achieve this synthesis with nature and experience I have combined various coloured porcelain clays with handbuilding techniques to create individual vessels.
