Artist statement

Catherine Aldrete-Morris' new work reveals an awakening leap from her known style, to one which features objects bordering on painting - like contoured sheets.

Catherine's forms are steeped in abstraction. The objects have evolved from flat-ware; bowl-like vessels with solid classically lined sculptural verticals to the current representations. The new work is less controlled in the sense that Catherine has come to terms with her medium and therefore is 'more accepting and relaxed with the material'.

It is not only the difference in the formality of the object that is obvious, but also the increase in scale, which she has more recently introduced. It is her intention to produce structures that one both spatially and metaphorically relate to. The aesthetic is predominantly block patterned colour, texture and multiple layers, which counter pose the simplicity of the object.
