Realities: three pieces - each 600cm x 600cm in size
This body of work explores notions of perception versus deception
through the medium of leaded glass, using patchwork designs.
Patchwork designs are centuries old and drawn from many countries.
They are evocative of happy childhood (simple square); the security of
home (log cabin); and cultural pride (chain). Leaded glass has strong
associations with places of worship and quiet contemplation. It speaks
of glorification and spiritual symbolism.
These pieces may beguile the viewer with their traditional symmetry
and transmission of light. Everything speaks of truth. Or does it?
Here both glass and designs have been subverted and all traditions
are up for grabs. The childs patchwork design reveals children at risk,
the log cabin contrasts the homeless with the affluent, the chain design
shows cultural difference as a cause of conflict rather than
celebration. And along with formal leadlighting techniques, cast and
screen printed glass are used, to deceive the eye and challenge
perceptions.
