Artist statement

Matt BurgessMatt's work explores the human condition. Investigating the reflection of emotion through cast glass human forms. He uses the body to reflect these feelings as it represents the state of emotion. Feeling does not just occur within the mind, it happens throughout the body, through the flesh. He finds great beauty in the notions of aloneness, existential thought and emotion and how these states enable a redefinition and exploration of our selves. His figures represent the position of the self in the world as they ponder where they stand. He aims to capture the rawness of emotion through the simplicity of the figure and its stark surroundings.

Matt is interested in the way glass plays with light and its fragility. Each of these aspects are suggestive of a life-like quality to his work. He uses the lost wax technique to create his forms. It is a timely process, from sculpting the wax, to the time in the kiln, through to cold working the glass.
