Artist's statement Nicole Ayliffe

Using hot glass, I have been creating glass forms that explore the ideas of optics and space. These forms act as an optical lens. Glass lends itself naturally to the reflection and refraction of light, and I have been using these qualities to create a space through which to view a photographic image of the landscape.

The thick glass forms work together with the space inside, making our attention shift between the surface and the interior as light refracts between the photographic image and the glass surfaces. As the viewer changes position the optical qualities of the glass create an illusion of movement, depth and distortion , encouraging the viewers participation.
