Artist statement

I was born and educated in Adelaide, South Australia. In 1998 I was briefly introduced to the basic process of Pate de Verre by a visiting glass artist. (This ancient process of glass making was originally discovered in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia in the 16th century BC. The term 'Pate de Verre', meaning paste of glass). From that time onwards Pate de Verre became my focus and I found it to be a natural transition from my previous kiln working techniques of casting and fusing.

In April 2004, I completed my Master of Visual Arts in Glass specialising in Pate de Verre at the University of South Australia, then resumed full-time professional practice.

My work is influenced by traditional Japanese and Asian concepts of nature and spirituality. In 1997 I travelled to Japan where I lived for three months, to experience both traditional and contemporary cultures. Learning about their concepts of nature and spirituality and the way these concepts permeate aspects of everyday life, left a lasting impression on me; these cultural experiences played an important part in my life and in the design and development of my glasswork.

My work is inspired by the beauty of nature's colours, patterns and textures. These elements in my work combine to evoke the sensual and tactile elements of nature, capturing the 'essence' of the moment.

My leaf forms are an important feature of my work; they are symbolic of the 'flow of life' and the nature of 'impermanence' in all things. Colour, pattern and texture express change and brevity as the whole cycle of life unfolds into one fleeting glimpse of reality, extending beyond the limitations of human perception. Leaves become living vessels, as they mirror the very aspects of impermanence present within our own fragile existence; in essence, my leaves are about re-establishing an identity with nature through the process of experience.
