Artist statement

Ian McFarland is a postgraduate student at the South Australian School of Art at the University of South Australia, specialising in painting.

Living within the Port Adelaide environs, Ian's work is influenced by and sourced from his personal observations of that particular industrial aesthetic that pervades the area.

His works are a constructed fusion of painting and collage using appropriated materials such as advertising imagery and street posters. The subject of the work is based on and influenced by, the idea of finding beauty, balance and cohesion in the dereliction of certain areas of the inner urban landscape, of the possibilities afforded by chance and the use of found objects discarded or overlooked by our contemporary modern urban society.

'By using contemporary street advertising imagery in the form by which it makes itself available, the beauty that can occasionally be found in the desolation of such an environment is able to manifest itself in the work.'
