Artist statement
My latest work includes two series of paintings pigeon beautiful and backyard appraisal. Both explore myriad painting techniques that I exploit in order to distil my sensory experience of place.
Through the application of paint onto surface, I attempt to physically describe my personal translation of my local environment. Paying homage to that which surrounds me every day, the paintings seek to document my account of the species, sounds and tactility within my backyard.
Working from direct imagery, reflexive methods and memory, my work evokes notions of exploration and discovery. Through the combination of abstract and representational imagery, I look to present alternative possibilities of reading one's landscape. The inclusion of a readable, representational depiction of a species within the work suggests the possibility that the abstracted landscape the species sits in has a foundation in 'reality'.
By positioning banal species within striking and abstracted landscapes I facilitate the exploration of the beautification of the ordinary. Primarily focusing on native flora and fauna, I seek to celebrate the preciousness of that which can be overlooked.
