Artist
statement
My interest lies with the abstract possibilities of the unexpected and unconventionally beautiful. The work is inspired by human form and comments on what is perceived as beautiful in our society. It is about self-expression, personal narrative and social comment. By pushing forms out of the symmetrical, the idea of perfect, flawless beauty is lost, and the beauty of the unusual is highlighted.
The 'spatial concepts' of painter and sculptor Lucio Fontana are conceptually inspirational, as is his aesthetic. Artists such as Fontana discovered their own dimensions, challenged and marked by experience, intimately linked to their own personal identity. The artist commits an act of sacrifice on the surface of the work, revealing his inner self.
Most recently my work has focused on relationships, intimacy, and the way we see ourselves and interact with others. My aim has been to make pots that draw you in by their beauty, surface and presence, and that ultimately relate to each other like in conversation, and yet are completely individual and unique. I am also very interested in the way my work, and the work of other artists, reflects personal identity and experience.
The word 'art' has become a term that implies status and distinguishes the functional from the aesthetic, but art ultimately gives form to human experience. Clay, as much as any other material, can be used as a medium through which reality is perceived.
