[photo:fugue] is a project by South Australian School of Art PhD student Tracy Cornish that explores the nature of photography and digital media as a series of counterpoints. A musical term, fugue relates to the series of counterpoints in a piece of music that come together to form a harmony.
Drawing on a deep understanding of the chemical, historical, electronic, and aesthetic character of photography Tracy analyses the mediums place in our information culture. Her knowledge of the science of complexity and network theory, coupled with her unique investigations into photography and digital media, creates a project full of complex interactions and outcomes.
Rarely employing a camera, Tracys work breaks with conventional understandings of photography and often requires the development of unusual devices and approaches to achieve her desired results.
In her analysis of photography Tracy encompasses the language and technologies of new media. She translates photographs into sound scapes via a specialised computer program and uses digital editing software and her computer programming knowledge to emphasise and analyse the translation of photographs into electronic and screen form.
Our contemporary experience of visual information is frequently mediated by the primary interface for electronic media; a screen, says Tracy. Quite different from the static nature of photographs, the screen is a constantly changing field of visual information.
At the basis of all of the work in [photo:fugue] is an understanding of photography as a complex system of interactions and permutations, or counterpoints, that come together to form a harmony.
