Illustration
Design plays a significant role in the design industry. Effective
illustration design contributes to and improves our visual
environment and enhances communication in a diverse arena of
applications.
Students studying Illustration Design, a professional major in Visual Communication Design in the School of Art, Architecture and Design, develop individual drawing and illustration styles and techniques as they focus on drawing, illustration, conceptual development, narrative, and printmaking skills. This specialisation prepares graduates for a career as a professional illustrator in the areas of publishing, advertising, publicity and new media.

Major Design Studio 1 (GRAP 1020)
Developing a design practice using a wide variety of processes, materials, purposes and experiences in the resolution of a design brief. More details (timetables, unit value and learning resources)
Illustration Design Studio 2 (GRAP 2009)
This course will enhance the technical and conceptual skills developed in first year studies. A variety of approaches will be taken exploring technique generation and basic principles of typography. More details (timetables, unit value and learning resources)
Illustration Design Studio 3 (GRAP 2010)
An introduction to a variety fo industry-based applications of visual communication. More details (timetables, unit value and learning resources)
Major Design Studio 4 (GRAP 3006)
Methods of graphic, typographic and idea generation using imagery; use of computers and desktop publishing software, techniques of analysis and response to client briefs; analysis and research into effective typographic communication; analysis and research into legibility and readability for both printed material and electronic media. Applications covered include: directional and information signage as it applies to retail, industrial, institutional and public places; diagrammatic representation of directional and information graphics. Professional Studio and Practice (GRAP 3007)
Methods of designing a range of items of identity, methods of manipulating text and image. Use of computers and desktop publishing software, techniques of analysis and response to client briefs, taking design to production. Analysis and research into effective typographic communication. Design Institute of Australia 2008 Student Design Awards
Bachelor of Visual Communication graduate Dan Withey
was awarded
first prize in the national Design Institute of Australia 2008 Student
Design Awards for his illustration work 'Pollution

Australian Academy of Design National Portrait Prize
Visual Communication student Emma Codrington won the Australian Academy of Design's National Portrait Prize for 2008.
2007 Southern Cross Package Design Awards Winners
Visual communication students had great success in the 2007 Southern Cross Package Design Awards. Honours student Shane Keane won a Gold Award for his entry in the Beverage Wrap Design Brief and also picked up a Silver Award in the Environmental Design category. Third year student Tom Crosby won a Gold Award in the Australian Paper Category. Both Kelly Smith and Ryan Smith from Honours received Commendations for their designs in the Beverage Wrap category. The awards attracted over 340 entries from around Australia.
AGIdeas International Design Week
AGIdeas is held annually. The aim of AGIdeas is 'to inspire excellence by presenting the insights and experiences from some of the world's leaders, those who have pushed the boundaries of design and established a benchmark to which designers must strive.' Prize and came 2nd in
the Colley Prize.

AGIdeas 2006 prizewinners
There were 14 UniSA finalists from the overall 35 finalists. Scott
Heinrich, a graduate in Visual Communication, won the Fabrica prize. He also
came 2nd in The Collie Trust Award. Georgia Perry, a Visual Communications
Honours student, won the Ken Cato Award (for Multimedia).
AGIdeas 2005 prizewinners
In
association with the
15th AGIdeas
international student design conference, AGIdeas offered three travelling
scholarships and Bachelor of Visual Communication students Scott Heinrich
(Honours) and Katrina Filippone (3rd year) won two of these awards.
AGIdeas 2004 prizewinners
At the
AGIdeas (Alliance Grafique
Internationale) International Design Conference,
for the 5th successive year UniSA students won major awards.
Yianni Hill was awarded two awards, the Collie Trust Award and the Fabrica
Scholarship to Italy. Hanne Eriksen from Norway, an international student,
was the runner up in the Collie Award with a further 8 of our students in
the 25 shortlisted entries.

Take Flight is the 2006 graduation showcase of graphic design and illustration design.

down is an exhibition of work by 15 Visual Communication Honours
students graduating in 2006.
The Scholastic National Illustrators Award 2005
Illustration Design students from Visual Communication
were highly successful in The Scholastic National Illustrators Award 2005,
winning all prizes on offer. The prize criteria were incorporated into the
2nd and 3rd year illustration studios for 2005. Josh Lee was the
overall winner and won $2,500 and was contracted to illustrate a
24-page picture book. Sarah Bettany and 2nd year student Gabriel Cunnet were
the runner-ups. Gabriel was contracted to illustrate the picture
book, Calico Camel, the picture book text which he used in his
submission for the Award.
International Online Design Project 2005
Veronika Kelly and Doreen Inhofer from South Australian School of Art collaborated with the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Hanover, for Bachelor of Visual Communication students to participate in an international online design project based on the theme Them and Us in 2005. 6th annual Design Institute of Australia (DIA) Awards 2005
Bachelor of Visual Communication (Honours) students in the Vis Com Consultancy were presented with three awards at the 6th annual Design Institute of Australia (DIA) Awards 2005.
- Clare Oaks was given an Award of Merit for her logo design for the Gordon F Smith Peace Trust.
- Alison Rodda and Helen Poynter, designers of the South Australian School of Art brochure which was given a High Commendation by the judges.
- Anna Rogers and Samantha Szocinski were also awarded a High Commendation for the UniSA Architecture Museum Brochure.
