Zero Waste SA Pam Keating Memorial Scholarship

The Zero Waste SA Pam Keating Memorial Scholarship has been
established in memory of Pam Keating, a noted environmentalist and waste
management expert who passionately believed in the importance of
reducing waste and its impact on our environment. The scholarship is
available to full-time students undertaking an Honours or Masters
program in an area of interest to the Zero Waste SA Research Centre for
sustainable design and behaviour (sd+b).
Priority research areas
Areas of interest include behaviour change and resource efficiency with eligible applicants required to choose a topic from the following:
- Material flows, urban metabolism and value chains for resource efficiency
- Waste avoidance and waste management towards a truly sustainable society
- Sustainable design and human behaviour that addresses issues of modified consumption patterns, and social innovation in sustainable design
- The psychology of consumption, understanding and changing consumer behaviour, and mobilising these attitudinal changes
- Resilient cities, energy and material-efficient architecture and urbanism
- Social sustainability and its relation to urban ecology, technology and design issues
- Prefabricated lightweight construction systems for disassembly, material efficiency and durability
- Measuring embodied energy, life cycle, consumption and ecological footprint,
- Improved decision making, helping governments, municipalities and companies with improvements to their waste cycles, water, energy and manufacturing processes
Scholarship
The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and an interview. Applicants must provide a written statement with their application outlining the research to be undertaken; their career goals and future plans ; and how the scholarship will help achieve their ambitions. A project summary from the applicant's supervisor containing a detailed description of the project and its outcomes should also be included.
The recipient must have the ability to be a positive ambassador for the objectives of Zero Waste SA. They will be offered six hours of informal mentoring or in-kind assistance by Zero Waste SA and may also have the opportunity to undertake paid employment at Zero Waste SA during the summer vacation period.
Value: $10,000 to be paid in two instalments of $5,000 after the study period 2 and study period 5 census dates. The recipient will also receive an offer of mentoring and possible paid employment at Zero Waste SA during the summer break.
The Zero Waste SA Research Centre sd+b Student Prize 2012
The Zero Waste SA Research Centre sd+b Student Prize 2012 recipient is:
Ms Aida Leon
She is undertaking a Master of Sustainable Design, in the School of Art,
Architecture & Design.
Her research topic: 'Innovative Strategies to foster resilience within
high vulnerable Australian suburbs'.
Aida is the 1st recipient of this student prize, value $2,000. Thank you
to the members of the Selection Panel.
