National Laboratory for Transport Network Analysis (NLTNA)
We have well-equipped laboratories and information technology facilities including the National Laboratory for Transport Network Analysis (NLTNA) which was established as a focus for traffic and transport network modelling in Australia. The Laboratory is an invaluable resource for modelling and analysis of options for traffic management and surveillance.

The Laboratory has state-of-the-art computer hardware and maintains copies of major software products for traffic simulation, transport network modelling, signalised intersection design and analysis and related urban traffic issues. The NLTNA also holds copies of the Metropolitan Adelaide Household Travel database and the ABS Adelaide journey to work database, as part of the area's on-going collaboration with Transport SA. Facilities and specialist equipment in the Laboratory include:
- advanced computing facilities including a high-performance PC cluster for intensive computations, in a specialist transport network modelling and analysis laboratory equipped with a full range of contemporary transport network models and Geographical Information System software
- GPS receivers for in-vehicle and personal use
- traffic classifiers, radar guns for traffic volume and speed measurement and analysis
-
noise monitoring equipment and associated data loggers and software for traffic noise measurement and analysis - instrumented vehicles with the ability to record second by second: Date, Time, Dist (km), Speed (km/h), Fuel (l), RPM, Manifold Pressure, AC on or off, Gear, PE, Eng Temp, Tpos, Latitude, Longitude, Height(m), GPS_Speed, Heading, No_Sats, Sats, GPS_Fix ,GPS_Age, Comments as well as second by second emissions of CO2, CO, HC, NOx, and N2
- A travel Behaviour and simulation laboratory, that is being used to quantify driver behaviour under different traffic conditions, then apply these results to micrsimulation models of traffic flow.
Commercial software packages currently operated by the NLTNA include:
- QRS-II
- EMME/2
- TranPlan
- TRIPS
- TrafikPlan
- Paramics
- SCATES
- aaSIDRA and
- INTANAL
GIS packages are TransCAD and MapInfo, in addition to all ESRI products including ARC/INFO and ArcView.

Further, an instrumented car equipped with GPS and on-board data logging equipment is available to record location, vehicle and engine performance as well as fuel and emissions behaviour. The instrumented car enables real-time on-road collection of data about traffic stream characteristics, fuel consumption, travel time and congestion.
