Awards for Teaching Excellence celebrate teachers (individuals and teams) renowned for teaching excellence, who have outstanding presentation skills and who have made a significant contribution to enhancing the quality of learning and teaching in higher education.
The eight categories of Awards for Teaching Excellence are:
Dr Martin Shanahan, University of South Australia
Ken Adams, University of South Australia
Paul Kershaw, University of South Australia
Dr J.H.F. (Erik) Meyer, University of South Australia
The 'learning to learn' team of Martin Shanahan, Ken Adams, Paul Kershaw and Eric Meyer has devised and embedded a research-based process that develops first year students' awareness of their own approach to learning. Their focus fosters independent learning and motivates students to become more aware of, and take responsibility for, their own learning. The process combines a powerful web-based learning inventory and immediate feedback with extensive in-course learning exercises and activities.
The 'learning to learn' culture forms a core part of the first year economics course. Despite having face-to-face classes of up to 800 and external students, the process respects, and supports each economics student as an individual learner. The process allows students to develop their own learning, improve their understanding of what it means to learn, and develops a culture of learning that empowers students beyond their first year of university. The process provides students with skills for lifelong learning.
Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning recognise and reward the diverse contributions made by individuals and teams to the quality of student learning.
Citations are awarded to those who have made a significant contribution to the quality of student learning in a specific area of responsibility over a sustained period, whether they are academic staff, general staff, sessional staff or institutional associates.
