January 26th is celebrated Australia-wide as Australia Day, a day to
celebrate the anniversary of British settlement in this beautiful
country. By the beginning of the 21st century this day is also
recognised as a day of mourning for the invasion and dispossession of
Indigenous people of this country known as 'Invasion Day'. Others like
to identify the day as 'Survival Day', not to ignore the invasion and
dispossession of their people but to recognise the survival of a race
that were expected to die out. Celebrating the strength and resilience
of Indigenous people.
Survival Day was celebrated Australia-Wide on the 26th of January 2010.
This included events in Adelaide, Tandanya (National Aboriginal Cultural
Institute Inc.) where Indigenous people come to celebrate the strength
and spirit of the Aboriginal and Torrens Strait Islander people as the
first people of this land. Festivities included music, performances from
youth, dance, food, stalls and lots of entertainment and workshops. The
day commences with the annual Justice and Peace 'candle light walk'
around Government House.
