Know the job market
Know the job market and you will know both opportunities and constrictions.
As economies fluctuate, new technologies are developed and world issues change priorities - the job market responds, opening up new employment sectors, creating demand in skills areas or downsizing employment as demand decreases.
While you are studying is the ideal time to review the job market and identify the growth trends, and sectors that are experiencing no growth or are shrinking.
Industries and occupations that are in high demand and have predicted growth over the next 5 years are the obvious areas for candidate shortages and therefore those graduates will be in high demand. Similarly where there is a reduction in the number of vacancies on offer, it is important to consider the potential impact on your employment opportunities and how you can combat this.
You can position yourself through 1) your choice of studies and 2) development of additional skills and experiences to ensure you have the competitive edge.
All employers value 'soft' skills in addition to the technical skills you are learning in your discipline and will look for these when recruiting employees. You can develop your employability skills through part time or casual work, your placements and community or club membership. Demonstrating an ability to operate as part of a team and meeting conflicting deadlines through effective time management are examples of qualities employers are looking for.
