Project scope

StudyingThe plan to produce more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers must, at a minimum, and for all Australian jurisdictions:

a) identify the factors that contribute to the numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people entering and remaining in teaching positions in Australian schools

b) analyse and assess the relative priority or contribution of each of the following elements to the numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people entering and remaining in teaching positions in schools

i. access/exposure to quality information and aspirations-building role models about teaching as a career choice for students in primary school
i. good quality career advice and aspirations-building role modelling in secondary schools
iii. access to role models that promote teaching professions as an achievable and desirable career path
iv. support for parents to support their child/ren to follow the teaching pathway
v. support for students to successfully achieve year 12 completion and university entrance grades
vi. incentives/support for year 12 school leavers to choose teaching professions pathways
vii. support for and skills of teachers to have the individual conversations and engagement with each student and their parents/carers about their individual career choices and the benefits of a teaching career
viii. universities approaches to attracting and retaining students into tertiary degree programs
ix. universities approaches to attracting and retaining university students into teaching degree programs
x. education employers approaches to attracting and retaining Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander AIEWs into professional teaching positions in schools
xi. education employers approaches to attracting and retaining Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander qualified people into teaching positions in schools and
xii. the range of Australian Government scholarships and other programs that contribute to all of the above elements (including, for example, the IYLP , AIEF and Governor General’s scholarships, the National Teacher Quality National Partnership reforms, etc.)

c) identify the work currently being undertaken across all Australian jurisdictions, and identify the gaps in that current work; and determine future priority initiatives that would help to deliver against the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Educator Workforce Strategy objectives in relation to teachers.
