Alana Crump

Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services)

“Hi, my name’s Alana, I’m currently studying the Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services) at UniSA, Magill campus.

One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most about studying this program is the exposure to such a broad range of political, social and cultural dimensions that you’re then able to guide to your own learning and your own professional development. For instance, I enjoy exploring things from a macro perspective, so I guide my assignments and my study topics to suit my learning objectives.

I found one of the benefits of studying the Social Science (Human Services) program is that it’s such a broad program. So, that can range from doing case work to working in aged care, disability, youth work or policy development. It’s very broad and it’s very diverse.

I originally began my degree with QUT in Queensland. When I moved to Adelaide, I looked to see which programs and universities I could transfer into quite easily, and UniSA gave me that opportunity.

One of things I’ve really enjoyed about studying at UniSA, and particularly in this program, is the field education. I was exposed to two field education placements, one was with the City of Tea Tree Gully Council, and my second has been here at the Australian Red Cross in their International Tracing Refugee and Asylum Seeker Services.

I was fortunate enough to win a position with my first host placement, with Tea Tree Gully Council, and I’ll begin in two weeks as a Youth Development Officer.

Many students that are studying this degree do gain employment through their placement or very soon after they finish placement, establish and secure work.

One of the positive things about studying at UniSA, which I’ve found at Magill campus, is all the assistance and the resources that you can tap into. If ever you’re having trouble with your assignments or thinking about ideas to write about, there’s always somebody on hand to talk to, whether that be in Learning Services or with one of your lecturers or your peers. It’s certainly a very nice environment and a very engaging learning environment.

A typical uni day for someone who’s interested in studying this program, you’ll be engaged in lots of lectures, tutorials and workshops. You will really need to plan your time and have good time management because there are a lot of assignments and it is a lot of work.

I would say come with an open mind, because it is a journey of growth and discovery. Learn to apply critical thinking skills at the beginning of the degree and you will be exposed to many different perspectives and ideologies that you may have thought or not thought about before, and this really can help guide your professional development and your professional practice.

My name’s Alana and I’m studying the Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services) at UniSA.”
