Industrial Design Student

Leigh Rowan

Bachelor of Design (Product Innovation)

"Hi, my name's Leigh Rowan, I'm a fourth year Industrial Design student at UniSA.

The best thing about the Industrial Design program is probably its variety, the fact that one day you can just be sitting there sketching, and the other day you could be on the computers doing CAD models. There's a lot of areas as well that Industrial Designers can get into, and for those people who get a bit bored with a career stuck behind a desk, Industrial Design is probably best for them.

The reason I chose UniSA is because I wanted to do Industrial Design and this uni is the only uni in South Australia that offers that course. I guess as well, I'd heard that it's a very practical uni and its got a good atmosphere about it.

I've liked a bit of furniture design, but at the same time I also quite like doing product design. Everyone wants to design the new iPod or something like that, we want to design cool stuff, but I guess I like furniture design at the moment, it's one of my areas I am focussing on this year definitely.

The thing I like most about being a university student is the freedom you get. Probably once you become professional, you're not going to get the sort of versatility and the freedom to do basically whatever you want to do. This is probably the one time in your life that you're not going to be abiding by rules, you can do whatever you want, you can design stuff that doesn't need to have a budget. It's just the versatility really.

The lecturers are all working professionals, they know what they're talking about and they've been there, they've done our course generally, and they're still working as Industrial Designers, they're not just some lecturer who doesn't really know what is going on in the outside world.

If you want a career that you're going to have a lot of fun doing and you can be creative, then Industrial Design is what you're in for. As long as you enjoy being creative and enjoy designing, then anyone can do it really. Because Industrial Design is such a versatile field you can do furniture design or you can spend all day on the computers if that's your thing. I guess if you've got a passion for design then you should become an Industrial Designer.

I'm Leigh Rowan, and I study Industrial Design at UniSA."
