Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences

2010 Higher Degree by Research Forum

The Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences is holding the 2010 Higher Degree by Research Forum on Friday, 6 August and Saturday, 7 August 2010 in the Amy Wheaton Building, Magill Campus.

This year the Forum will open on Friday with two exceptional keynote speakers:  Professor Elspeth Probyn and Professor Graeme Turner.   Elspeth Probyn is the Director of the Hawke Research Institute, a Research SA Chair and Professor of Gender and Cultural Studies, as well as co-director of the Centre for Postcolonial and Globalisation Studies.  She has taught media studies, sociology and literature in Canada and the US, and most recently was the Professor of Gender Studies at the University of Sydney. She has held several prestigious visiting appointments, including the Mellon Distinguished Scholar, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and Honorary Professor, Albert Schweitzer International University, Geneva.  Graeme Turner is an ARC Federation Fellow, Professor of Cultural Studies, and Director of the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies, University of Queensland. He is one of the key figures in the development of cultural and media studies in Australia and has an outstanding international reputation in the field.

In addition, the EAS Final of the 3 Minute Thesis Competition is being held where 3 HDR students will explain their research topic in accessible terms to the audience in 3 minutes!  The winner of this final will go on to compete in the University final being held at the end of August.  The winner of that final may also have the chance to compete at the Australian and New Zealand Three Minute Thesis Competition to be hosted by University of Queensland on 22 September 2010.

On Saturday, 44 abstracts submitted from HDR candidates and Honours students, at all stages of their candidature, have been internally peer-reviewed and chosen for presentation.  The presentations might be a summary of work so far, a part of their research, a summary of results, or a discussion of methodological issues that they have confronted.  The Forum aims to give researchers, both inexperienced and experienced, the opportunity to present their research in a challenging yet supportive environment.  It is also a wonderful opportunity to become involved in the research culture at UniSA and to meet other researchers, exchange ideas and share new knowledge.

Dinner will be provided free of charge on Friday evening with lunch and refreshments also provided on Saturday.
