LPLC: The Schooling Australia Project

Schooling Australia: A curriculum history of English teaching, teacher education
and public schooling from Federation to World War II.
Welcome to the website for the Schooling Australia project. These pages
provide an electronic source of English curriculum data collected as part of
the Schooling Australia project. The project was funded by the Australian
Research Council from 2001 to 2003.
About Schooling Australia
The Schooling Australia project has involved the collation of archival
English curriculum material from 1901-1938. This has included primary,
post-primary and teacher training curriculum material and teacher training
resources from South Australia and New South Wales for the period 1901-1938
and nationally for the period of the 1930s.
One of the aims of the project was to develop an electronic resource to make
the primary data and analysis available to researchers. The material
collected is of significance to further curriculum and historical research
regarding the development of education in Australia in the first half of the
20th Century.
This site makes available the English curriculum documents in transcribed
and scanned form by year and by state for primary school English and
post-primary school English. Aspects of the analysis of the curriculum
materials conducted by the key researchers, Professor Bill Green, Associate
Professor Jo-Anne Reid (CSU) and Dr. Phillip Cormack (UniSA) are also
available on this site.

Primary School English
From this section you can access the primary school English curriculum
materials for South Australia and New South Wales from 1900 to 1938, and the
national materials (for all other states) for the 1930s.
Each state/national collection is presented as:
- Basic course statements as published in the Course of Instruction. These
statements are divided into the component subjects that made up primary
English such as Reading, Spelling, Composition, Writing, Poetry. These are
presented chronologically by the years in which they were published (a new
course was not published each year and the gaps between years of publication
varied considerably). These basic course statements are published in word
processed form where possible. They are also made available as a scan of the
original text so that the format and layout can be examined.
- Supplementary curriculum materials which were developed to supplement the
basic course statements. These may include teacher guides, student
materials, readers.
- Key documents selected by the research team which link to the curriculum.
These may include articles or speeches on the curriculum published in the
official Education Gazette or other places with relevance to the English
curriculum
In addition, the basic course statements for South Australia and New South
Wales were analysed to indicate the modifications that were made to them
between the various versions and updates. These provided the basis for
discourse analytic work undertaken in the project. These are published as
analysed course statements.

was not published each year and the gaps between years of publication
varied considerably). These basic course statements are made available
as a scan of the original text so that the format and layout can be
examined.
- Supplementary curriculum materials which were developed to
supplement the basic course statements. These may include teacher
guides, student materials, readers.
