2011 John and Johan Høj Rural Reconnect Scholars

Four young country women have been awarded a UniSA scholarship to help cover their costs of moving to the city and settling down to their first year of university studies. The John and Johan Høj Rural Reconnect scholarships, valued at $6,000 each, were established via a personal gift from Professor Peter Høj, Vice Chancellor and President of University of South Australia, to honour his father and grandfather who lived in rural Denmark and did not get the opportunity to educate themselves to express their full potential.

The scholarships have been designed to reduce the financial barriers country students face when they leave home to pursue their higher education ambitions. All four recipients received a final Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank of 99 or higher, which is a great testament to their abilities and their desire to succeed. On 8 March 2011, over 70 guests attended the annual Foundation Committee Luncheon held in the Bradley Forum. The Foundation Committee, made up of Bruce Linn (Chair), Nigel Relph, Paul Beard and Paula Nagel, manages philanthropic monies received from individual and corporate donors to the University.

Paul Beard, UniSA's Chief Operating Officer, reported good results for the Foundation against a backdrop of strong donor support for UniSA and stabilising capital markets.

Bob and Gayle Cowan Honoured at Annual Luncheon

New Chancellor's Club members - Bob and Gayle Cowan, with Chancellor Ian Gould (left)Two of UniSA's most passionate supporters, Bob and Gayle Cowan, were welcomed into the Chancellor's Club at the recent Foundation Committee Luncheon.

Bob and Gayle Cowan established the Cowan Grant to support initiatives that help financially disadvantaged students gain a higher education and they first donated to UniSA in 2005. They are particularly passionate about helping students from regional areas and students with disabilities and they also encourage the broadening of horizons through international travel and challenge.

The Cowan Grant program has grown considerably since 2005 and in 2011 nineteen UniSA students will receive an award. At the Foundation Scholarships and Grants ceremony in June six Cowan Regional Grants, six Cowan Ability Grants, four Cowan International Placement Grants for the Hawke Ambassador Program and three Cowan Young Endeavour Practicum Grants will be awarded.

Sculpture and Installation Prize

Ms Ray Harris, a Visual Arts (Honours) graduate, was awarded the 2010 Constance Gordon-Johnson Sculpture and Installation Prize at the recent UniSA Art Architecture + Design Graduate Exhibitions opening night. Ray's winning installation is entitled 'The Woman Who ... Series 2008'.

The award was made possible by a generous donation from the estate of the late Constance Gordon-Johnson, a noted South Australian artist and arts worker who was well known as a leader in the visual arts, specifically community arts, and this award commemorates her vision, participation and creative spirit.

Patricia Gordon-Stevens, Yvonne Clark, Marcus Stevens Patricia Gordon-Stevens, Constance's sister, presented Ray with her award. Patricia and the other members of the selection panel were very impressed with Ray's installation which they felt was highly innovative, very engaging and told a great story. The panel also commended Jessie Lumb for 'Working ideas (Jingdezhen)' and Mary Sladdin for 'Denim Project2_ Dualism of Denim'.

The inaugural Friends of the South Australian School of Art Inc Prize was presented by Friends Vice President, Bill Morrow, to Belinda Wood at the recent UniSA Art Architecture + Design Graduate Exhibitions opening night. The Prize, funded by the Friends of the South Australian School of Art Inc, is awarded to the student with the highest grade point average (GPA) for courses fulfilling the requirements for completion of the second year of the Bachelor of Visual Arts (Specialisation) or the Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication) program. The prize will be offered again in 2011.

Duguid Memorial 2010 Duguid Memorial Lecture

The 2010 Duguid Memorial Lecture, held in honour of Dr Charles Duguid OBE and Mrs Phyllis Duguid OAM, was hosted this year by Flinders University on the 29th of October.

The memorial lectures are designed to further harmonious relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities and are a testament to the tireless work of Dr Duguid and his wife in their campaign for more humane policies for Aboriginal people. More...

The Rotary Club of the Barossa Valley Foundation Scholarship will support financially disadvantaged, high achieving students from the Barossa or Eden Valley regions. John Semmler a trustee of the Barossa Valley Foundation Scholarship explains, "The Scholarship is a way for the club to show support and pride in young aspiring members of our community and we look forward to awarding the first of these scholarships in 2011."


Surveying SA Scholarships

Surveying SA was formed with representatives from the Surveyors Board of South Australia (SBSA) Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI), Spatial Industries Business Association (SIBA) and the University of South Australia (UniSA) with the aims of increasing the number of licensed surveyors in South Australia and ensuring the continuity of surveying tertiary studies in the State. We are delighted to announce that in 2011 Surveying SA will fund a number of scholarships and grants for our surveying students.

Five Surveying SA Laptop Grants, each valued at $1,000, will be available for students who are enrolled full-time in the first year of the Bachelor of Environmental Science degree program and intending to undertake the following spatial science electives as part of their program: Environmental Remote Sensing, Geomatics and Geospatial Exploration. Four
Surveying SA Scholarships, valued at $5,000 each, will be offered to full-time students commencing the Master of Surveying program offered by the School of Natural and Built Environments.

On Thursday 19 August, over 80 guests attended the UniSA fundraising screening of Matching Jack at the Nova East End Cinema. The guests were treated to an interview with the film's young star, Tom Russell. Tom commented that making this film was an emotional experience - a statement that most of the movie goers attested to, while reaching for the tissues......

We are delighted to advise that this fundraising event will provide close to $2000 in support for the Gavin Wanganeen Indigenous Scholarship.

The evening of May 26 marked a special celebration in our UniSA calendar! The annual Scholarships and Grants Ceremony provided an opportunity for UniSA to acknowledge the generosity of corporate and individual donors who provide awards to disadvantaged students and those with outstanding academic ability.

Over 320 guests, including recepients and their families and friends, donors and UniSA staff celebrated the donors' commitment to providing students with academic opportunities. 119 scholarships and grants valued at almost $490,000 were presented at the event.

The Ian Davey Research Thesis Prize has been made possible by the generosity of Emeritis Professor Ian Davey, who established the annual prize in 2007 to acknowledge the most outstanding research thesis by a UniSA Higher Degree Research student.

 


The John and Johan Høj Rural Reconnect Scholarships recipientsVice Chancellor Professor Peter Høj recently hosted an afternoon tea to meet the The John and Johan Høj Rural Reconnect Scholarship recipients. As part of the Rural Reconnect project initiative, four scholarships valued at $6000 each have been awarded to four rural students this year, to assist with the costs of moving to the city to study with UniSA. The students come from the South Australian country areas of Wirrabarra, Port Pirie, Poochera and Barmera and are all looking forward to starting their higher education at UniSA.

 


Patrick Jonker with Chancellor's Club membersAs the Santos Tour Down Under hit Adelaide streets again, UniSA Chancellor's Club members took part in an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Adelaide City Council Tour Village and the TDU Media Centre. The group was joined by former professional rider and Team UniSA Supporters' Club Captain, Patrick Jonker. As well as providing an extremely interesting commentary on Team UniSA-Australia, other riders and the TDU stages, Pat delighted the group by introducing some of the international riders, mechanics and support crews that were setting up in the Village.

Brooke Randall, a Visual Arts graduate from UniSA's School of Art, Architecture and Design, is the winner of the 2009 Constance Gordon-Johnson Prize for Sculpture and Installation. Brooke's winning installation is entitled "May Contain Stylised Violence I, 2009".
