After dropping out of school at 14 I never thought I’d go to University, but here I am and I could not be more proud. I made the decision to study again because I wanted to lead by example for my daughter. I had been struggling to find a job that would keep us going. Being a single parent, all I wanted to do is build a career to support her.
After successfully completing the Foundation Studies course at UniSA College I am now studying the Bachelor of Social Science. I hope to be a social worker one day, and to be able to say to people “I know what you’re going through, I’ve been there and I’m proof that you can turn your life around”.
When I was asked if I wanted to be involved in this opportunity to help raise funds for scholarships, I was thrilled to be able to help. Scholarships make such a difference to students like me. By taking away some of my financial stress my scholarship has meant I can concentrate on my degree and give it my very best shot. For that I am very grateful to my scholarship donors and I cannot thank them enough for their kindness.
Going to University, and being given the chance to succeed, has transformed my life. I want my story to show others who haven’t had it easy that it is possible to go to University and to make a career a reality, not just a dream.
If you do have the ability to help other students like me, please consider donating to UniSA’s Scholarship Fund. Your gift will make all the difference to students who are disadvantaged because of the things they’ve had to overcome, not because of their ability.
It is so inspiring to meet students like Danielle who have shown great bravery in coming to University. There are so many students like her at UniSA – in fact, 1 in 3 of our students come from a disadvantaged background.
UniSA has put in place programs and scholarships which mean these young people are supported, motivated and given a chance to keep going. UniSA now has the highest rate in South Australia of students from a disadvantaged background who successfully complete their degrees, but there is still so much more that can be done with your help.
By making donating to UniSA’s Scholarship Fund, you will be enabling more young people like Danielle to reach for their dreams. What’s more, if you make your gift before 15 December 2017 we will be able to award your money directly to a student early next year - so it can make an immediate and transformational impact.
When you make a donation to the UniSA Scholarship fund, every dollar goes to empowering our students and changing their lives. The UniSA Scholarship Fund provides scholarships and grants in the key areas of equity, excellence, international, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The first awards will be made from this fund in early 2018.
All donations to the 2017 Scholarship Fund Appeal will support scholarships specifically for disadvantaged students.
