Global Experience Highlight

The Global Experience Highlight Ezine is issued monthly and provides information on upcoming Experience Suite activities relevant to a particular discipline.


Antipodeans Abroad

Antipodeans Abroad specialises in educational and volunteer programs with a purpose. Antipodeans Abroad programs incorporate sustainable, grassroots projects which aim to enrich the travel experience of participants while contributing to a community project.

University students can choose from 8 destinations in Asia, South America and Africa. There are several departure dates in November, January or June for each destination. Students may volunteer from 4 - 12 weeks in one of the following grassroots community and development areas:

  • Community Health
  • Building and Construction
  • Teaching English
  • Caring for Orphans
  • Environmental conservation
  • Working with Street Kids
  • Sport Coaching
  • Community Work with Non-Government Organisations

Community Service Learning Project 2012

Community Service Learning project requires students to:

  • Work in teams to solve real problems experienced by community organisations.
  • Work with the community partner to understand their needs and the problem.
  • Develop, test, and implement appropriate solutions.
  • Write a learning journal throughout the course reflecting on the problem solving process, their use of the knowledge and skills taught throughout their degree, and the relevance of the service learning project experience to their future careers.

Assessment centres on the ways in which students collaborate to solve problems and engage with their community partners. It includes a learning journal; a project proposal and presentation and a final report.

Students are expected to attend seven formal workshops through the study period and specialist workshops and training as required.

Enrolments for 2012 are now being accepted.

Projects available include:

  • Cleland Wildlife Park new koala enclosure project
  • Hands Working Together: creating a dynamic community presence for Marra Dreaming
  • Riding for the Disabled: Covered arena project at Globe Derby
  • Mari Yerta Men's and Young Men's Aboriginal Corporation website and business plan
  • Plus many more excellent interdisciplinary projects.

Projects Abroad - Overseas Volunteer Programmes

Projects Abroad organises worthwhile and sustainable community based volunteer programmes in 26 developing countries.

Volunteer can work with can take place from a period of one to six months. Volunteers are always needed so students can choose their own start dates.

The type of volunteer work on offer includes:

  • Teaching
  • Orphanage and care home support
  • Human rights development
  • Conservation
  • Building
  • Health education
  • Physiotherapy
  • Sports coaching

Countries for volunteer placements include Cambodia, Peru, Mongolia, Ethiopia, Romania and Nepal.

AIESEC

Points: A key role within the AIESEC Adelaide Committee (either President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer) for a minimum of 1 term can reward you with 10 points toward your Experience Suite.


Football United at UniSA

UniSA is leading the way to promote social justice through football (soccer) with the introduction of the Football United-UniSA program in South Australia.

FUn-UniSA provides an excellent opportunity to have fun, learn new skills, make new connections and be part of something very exciting in our local community!

Each FUn-UniSA site caters for specific needs of the local communities and each program is designed with extensive consultation with local partners and community leaders. Days and times vary, and the program is heavily relying on volunteers.

Volunteers can engage with the program in a variety of roles at one or more sites, and their time commitment is negotiable and may vary with the role undertaken. Programs involve both boys and girls and both male and female volunteers are required. Volunteering roles include:

  • coaching & skills
  • fitness & conditioning
  • sport science
  • sport medicine & injury prevention
  • research support
  • media officers
  • fundraising
  • project/event management
  • site coordination
  • business development
  • project officers

AIM Overseas

AIM Overseas are also offering opportunities to study overseas in one of its 3-4 week short programs. Programs include Health Science programs in Mexico and Thailand, Tourism Management and Practice, Teacher Education in the US in addition to Volunteering opportunities worldwide in conservation, community and more.

All programs are delivered in English and depending on your program you may apply for credit and funding.

Volunteer with TIA International Aid

TIA International Aid is an organisation based in Adelaide, founded in February 2009 specifically to raise money for the support of disadvantaged children in Bolivia, and later, in other countries. Tia International Aid was established in February 2009 by UniSA student, Tessa Henwood-Mitchell.

TIA are currently looking for passionate, committed people who have some time available to help out, and useful skills to donate. Help is needed in the following areas:

  • Organising events
  • Getting involved in fundraising
  • Being a member of the executive committee
  • Publicity, advertising and media
  • ....and much more!

Points: Volunteering with TIA International Aid can reward you with 15 points (40 hours+) or 30 points (80 hours +) toward your Experience Suite.


Habitats for Humanity - Global Village

Global Village trips offer participants a unique opportunity to become active partners with people from other cultures. Team members work alongside members of the host community, raising awareness of the burden of poverty housing and building decent affordable housing worldwide.

The Global Village programme offers international volunteers the exciting opportunity to take part in house building and renovating projects. Global Village trips last two weeks with usually one week of building and one week of travel and local sightseeing. International volunteers work and interact with Habitat homeowners and the local community to build homes as well as communities.

Participants may participate individually in open teams or you or your organisation can get together 12 or more people to form a Global Village team.

Destinations include: Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Cost: The total costs of participating on a Global Village project range from $3,000 to $4,000 for a standard trip.
