The Forum will be opened by the Lord Mayor, Mr Michael Harbison [notes available *]. There will be a brief address by the Minister for Adelaide, Jane Lomax-Smith, then Ms Sarah Whyte, Chair of the Centennial Parklands Foundation (NSW) will speak. In the closing session Mr Jim Daly, President of APPA will invite the audience to pose questions on current issues.
This public forum will enable the community to consider the value of parklands as public spaces, to learn from interstate and overseas practices in the use and preservation of parklands and to participate in a lively discussion about issues affecting our own Adelaide Parklands.
Points of view raised at the Forum will be communicated to the Adelaide City Council, the appropriate State Government Department for their information and also the Adelaide Park Lands Authority when it is established.
Among the speakers for this forum, and providing an external perspective, will be Ms Sarah Whyte. Ms Whyte was appointed Chair of the Centennial Parklands Foundation in May 2000. The Foundation's mission is to contribute to the value of Centennial Parklands and its environmental, cultural and recreational significance. It aims to ensure that the Centennial Parklands environment continues to be enjoyed now and by future generations. The purposes of the Foundation include:
- To preserve the natural environmental value of Centennial Parklands
- To encourage and promote enjoyment of recreation and activity within natural surroundings
- To recognise and appreciate the natural and historical significance of Centennial Parklands
- To enhance and promote all other aspects of the environmental benefits provided by Centennial Parklands to be enjoyed by all members of the public
Ms Whyte will contribute ideas and strategies to encourage stronger community and corporate support for open parkland spaces.
The closing session of the forum will be addressed by Mr Jim Daly, President of the Adelaide Parklands Preservation Association (APPA) during which the audience will be invited to pose questions to him and to other speakers about our Adelaide Parklands. APPA has devised the following issues for discussion for this purpose.
- Proposal to re-develop Victoria Park by constructing a major stadium to serve both horse racing and motor sports interests
- State, National and World Heritage Listing of the Adelaide Parklands
- Establishment of the Adelaide Park Lands Authority
- Introduced or native species for plantings in the Parklands
- Major events in the Parklands - Lack of clear policy
- Car parking on the Adelaide Parklands
- Use of water on the Parklands
- Water quality in the Torrens Lake
- Low Priority given to return of alienated Adelaide Parklands eg:
- SA Water depot
- Police Barracks at Thebarton
- Former netball courts – Edwards Park
- STA land near Morphett St Bridge
- Remediation of land for Torrens River Park – (near Morphett Street Bridge)
- Britannia Roundabout re-development
