The Adelaide Parklands Tours

If you are interested in attending any of the tours listed below, please download and complete the registration form from the web site and fax or mail, with payment, to the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre. Unfortunately booking and payment must be received in advance. No bookings will be taken on the day of the tours.
Maps of each tour will be available from your tour leaders on the day as well as a bottle of water, but we suggest bringing additional water, if very hot, as well as sun-screen/hats and comfortable walking shoes (for walking and bicycle tours). Bicycle helmets will be supplied. At the end of your tour, you will return to your starting point (unless otherwise stated).

Walking Tours
W1: Back streets and three corner jacks
Danger, the unexpected, fast cars, speedways, tracks, questions,
challenges, dialogues, discoveries, dilemmas, possibilities and exotic
surprises
People, planning, planners, priorities
A 2hr slow walk through the south west end of the city and part of the west
parklands, looking at the built environment, the relationship of the city to
its squares and parks, and the role of the vehicle – Veale Gardens, Whitmore
Square, West Terrace, ANZAC Highway, the rail tracks, Sir Donald Bradman
Drive – and back.

W2: Geographical heritage tour
This tour will focus on South Australia's first Surveyor-General, Colonel William Light, and his connections with various sites in the Adelaide Park Lands. Starting at Light Square the tour will include Light's Monument where William Light is buried, the Survey Marker opposite the Newmarket Hotel denoting where the city survey commenced, Light's Vision on Montefiore Hill, and sites on North Terrace associated with Light.

W3: The Heart of the Park Lands
This tour will visit and consider the evolution and heritage of the Creswell, Pennington and Angas Gardens including War Memorial Drive, Town Clerk's Walk, the development of King William Street as a symbolic corridor, the role of William O'Brien, John Ednie Brown and August Pelzer in creating this tract of park land, and significant trees and features in this location.

W4: Yaitya Bulto tour
The Yaitya Bulto (Indigenous Heritage) tour will focus on sites of importance to Kaurna people with a particular focus on places of linguistic significance. We start at Piltawodli, site of the ‘Native Location’, where so much of the Kaurna language and knowledge about Kaurna people was recorded. Many sites which have utilised the Kaurna language in public art and signage will be included in the tour as well as Tinninyawodli, an important site with a known Kaurna name, which is yet to receive any public recognition.

Bicycle Tours
B1/B2: Parklands Bike Tour
Showcasing a myriad of Parklands’ elements, this tour will highlight the
varying landscapes of the Adelaide Parklands, including recreation and
sporting facilities, significant biodiversity sites, major event venues and
the riverine environment.
The tour will mainly follow the route of the new ochre coloured 'Adelaide
Park Lands Trail', which has been recently constructed through the southern
and eastern Parklands.
Points of interest (and no doubt topics of debate), will be the Bush for
Life site in Tuttangga (17) – a fantastic urban example of pre European
vegetation, Victoria Park/Bakkabakkandi and its varied uses and landscapes,
Rymill Park/Mullawirraburka – one of the City’s most popular family picnic
locations, Frome Park (unofficial name) and its pending role as a new
gateway to the Botanic Park Precinct, and Elder Park – a major event venue
likely to undergo change soon.

Additional Information:
Bicycles and helmets will be supplied. Participants should bring a drink
bottle, sunscreen, shoes and comfortable clothing. The majority of the
tour will be on off-road paths; however some riding on the road will be
required.
Coach Tours
C1: A Cooks Tour of the Adelaide Parklands
The extent and historical and contemporary uses of the Adelaide Parklands
will be highlighted in this coach tour which takes in the fringes as well as
near city areas. The route will follow a network of roads
around and through the Parklands stopping at several locations to highlight
points of historical interest, landmarks, and sites with stories to tell.
See gracious homes, the golf course and stately trees in North Adelaide and
catch views of the Torrens Lake and city as well as the Adelaide Oval and
nearby sporting facilities. Travel along the eastern boundary of Victoria
Park Racecourse. Pass Ochiltree House, a Victorian Italianate mansion built
in 1882 in the south-east corner of the city, the Himeji Gardens on South
Terrace, and the playing fields and open spaces of the South Parklands,
before journeying west to the West Terrace Cemetery and the Adelaide High
School. Note the Adelaide Gaol and Bonython Park en route to the northern
fringes of the Parklands featuring grand houses, parks, and city and
foothills views as well as former grazing and quarrying sites. Travel back
to the city via Brougham Place and Frome Road passing a section of parkland
previously used as a car park but soon to be returned to open space designed
as a link between the University of Adelaide and the Botanic Park and
Gardens.
