UniSA EveryCity Symposium puts the decline of public space on the agenda

Back to Update 10 index

In a time where corporate buildings and sprawling shopping complexes dominate cities, and the traditional public buildings of the colonial era are disappearing without modern equivalents – there are some important questions that need to be asked:

Where are all the ‘places for the people’? What can be done about this loss of public ownership?

In one of the most innovative projects of the year, the University of South Australia’s The Workings of Structure and Edifice delves into the intellectual core of what constitutes the best in architectural ideas and practice of civic space in Australia.

EveryCity Edifice, chaired by elected Adelaide City councillor Judith Brine – will see key practitioners and theoreticians in the field debate issues critical to the future of our cities. Contributors will present their opinions in a dynamic and interactive process, and national speakers include Australian studies expert Nikos Papastergiadis and award-winning architects John Wardle and Kerstin Thompson.
