UniSA EveryCity Symposium puts the decline of public space on the agenda
In a time where corporate buildings and sprawling shopping complexes
dominate cities, and the traditional public buildings of the colonial era
are disappearing without modern equivalents – there are some important
questions that need to be asked:
Where are all the ‘places for the people’? What can be done about this loss
of public ownership?
In one of the most innovative projects of the year, the University of South
Australia’s The Workings of Structure and Edifice delves into the
intellectual core of what constitutes the best in architectural ideas and
practice of civic space in Australia.
EveryCity Edifice, chaired by elected Adelaide City councillor Judith Brine
– will see key practitioners and theoreticians in the field debate issues
critical to the future of our cities. Contributors will present their
opinions in a dynamic and interactive process, and national speakers include
Australian studies expert Nikos Papastergiadis and award-winning architects
John Wardle and Kerstin Thompson.
Topics to be discussed include:
- Who do Australian cities serve and who should they serve?
- Are our cities neglecting human needs to cater for corporate demands?
- What creative ideas should be applied to modern cities and their architecture to make them more inclusive and stimulating?
- How can collaborative and multidisciplinary practices contribute to making new constructed ecologies in public spaces where people are invited to relate and participate with one another?
