The University's commitment to support access to knowledge in the wider community and foster social research was embedded in the 1997 decision to establish the Hawke Centre, honouring the contribution of South Australia's only Prime Minister, The Hon Bob Hawke AC. International patron, Nelson Mandela, has personally endorsed the Centre’s values: strengthening our democracy, valuing our diversity and building our future.

The Centre has worked towards strengthening public learning and community engagement with UniSA through a lively public program since 1999. It won the SA Great Award for Education in 2001.

The prestigious Annual Hawke Lecture, first delivered in 1998, now attracts a capacity audience of 1000, features highly influential speakers and is broadcast nationally. Promoting understanding of sustainable society issues is also reflected in the research and policy analysis work of the Hawke Research Institute, and in the collections of the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Library.

Into the future, a new and vibrant facility planned for the City West campus will enable the Centre to offer a civic gallery, library, and forum and debate areas for public access.

It will also feature programs encouraging active youth citizenship and international understanding. It will be co-located with the UniSA Art Museum in an exciting North Terrace building designed by award winning architect, John Wardle.

In 2003 the Centre reached a milestone, having raised over $1m entirely from private donations to support this vision. Supplementing private gifts to the Centre, fundraising and awareness events have been arranged interstate and most recently in Hong Kong, where Bob Hawke delivered the 2004 Australia Day Address to the HK Australia Chamber of Commerce.

The Hawke Centre has also achieved a mailing list of over 1800 public program supporters, and full details of its activities are available within this web site.
