Announcing the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

The Division of Health Sciences is pleased to announce that we will be competing in the 2012 Australia & New Zealand Three Minute Thesis Competition

About the Competition
Participants will explain their thesis topic and its significance in a clear and engaging way. And all in just 3 minutes!

The winner of the 3MT competition in Health Sciences will take part in the UniSA Grand Final, 2012. UniSA's overall winner will then compete in the Australia & New Zealand competition later this year, which will be hosted by the University of Queensland.

What is it?
3MT is an exercise in developing academic and research communication skills. Masters by Research and Doctoral students will have 3 minutes to give an engaging and dynamic talk on their thesis topic and its significance in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience.

What it is not 3MT is not an exercise in trivialising or 'dumbing-down' research. The talk should engage the audience without reducing research to entertainment value only.

History
The first 3MT was held at the University of Queensland (UQ) in 2008 with 160 HDR students competing.  In 2009 and 2010, the 3MT concept was promoted to other Australian and New Zealand universities.  Enthusiasm for the 3MT concept and its adoption in numerous universities led to the development of an international competition, with the Inaugural Australia & New Zealand 3MT competition first held at UQ in 2010. Last year was the first year the Division of Health Sciences participated in the competition and  Shervi Lie, from the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences won The Division of Health Sciences and the UniSA Final and progressed to the National competition hosted by the University of Western Australia.

See Shervi compete in the University finals here.

What you have to do

You must explain your thesis topic and its significance in a clear and engaging way in just three minutes in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience. The presentation is a talk which may be supported by one single static PowerPoint slide. Presentations are strictly limited to three minutes - if your talk exceeds three minutes you will be disqualified.
