Overview

The Business in China Intensive School (BUSS 5329) has been designed to provide participants with skills, knowledge and experiences to be able to interact with the China market with depth and breadth of understanding around Eastern and Western management values and practices. These skills, knowledge and experiences will be developed through an initial understanding of the principles, processes and values involved in Business in China.

Through a series of seminars, workshops, readings and assessment tasks spread over the two week period of the tour, participants will develop an appreciation of management principles appropriate in China and the significance for business managers of understanding variations between Eastern and Western business values and practices.

We include both the Eastern and Western focus on contemporary issues within most management disciplines, so that you are in tune with, or ahead of, developments within the China business market. And finally, our delivery approach aims to enable you to share practical experiences of a range of issues with your tour colleagues.

The Business in China Intensive School will equip participants with a systematic framework to make sense of, and take advantage of, the political, cultural, financial, legal, industry and market factors that influence the way business is conducted in China.

To ensure these objectives are met, and that participants have developed the requisite skills and knowledge arising from the tour, assessment will be rigorous and ongoing. The course curriculum has been designed around contemporary research related to Business in China.

MBA and MIB Participants will receive credit for two electives towards their MBA as a result of completing all the academic requirements of the Business in China Intensive School.

FAQs

1. Am I eligible to apply for BICIS?

Students applying for BICIS should have completed no less than four MBA courses before 11 April 2012 or have specific approval from the program director. Priority will be given to IGSB MBA students at a more advanced stage of their program. (Non-IGSB MBA students please refer to FAQ 10 and 11).

2. Are places limited?

Yes, places for BICIS are capped at 32. Quota restrictions may apply as places per location and program are limited. This is in order to achieve a balanced representation between the on-campus, online and offshore students as well as providing an opportunity for participants outside the University, including members of the MBA Alumni and business community, to attend.

 a) Fill in soft copies of the application documents

        Checklist

5. How will I know whether I've been successful?

This year places will be offered to applicants, who meet the criteria of having completed 6 or more MBA courses, on a first come, first serve basis. Applicants who have completed less than 6 courses, will be selected after applications close on 6 November 2011 and will be notified via email by Friday 11 November 2011.

6. What is the cost to attend BICIS?

The fee for BICIS incorporates:
Course Fees covering two courses (email Nina Wang for specific figures)
Ancillary Fee A$2,200 including the cost of two weeks accommodation in Shanghai and Beijing (three star), comprehensive learning materials, most meals, in-country transportation and some cultural tours. The ancillary fee does not include return international airfare to China, a VISA for China, airport transfers or personal expenses.

7. Can I defer payment for BICIS via FEE-HELP?

Payment for the course fees for the BICIS may be deferred via FEE-HELP, however, the ancillary fee of A$2,200 must be paid in full by 13 January 2012.

8. Is there a deposit and when do I have to pay the BICIS fees by?

Successful applicants will be sent an invoice for a non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of A$500 in order to secure their place in the course. To secure your place a non refundable deposit of $500 needs to be paid within a week of receiving the offer. The balance of payment will be due on Friday13 January 2012.

9. Does the University provide any financial assistance for participation in study overseas?

All UniSA students who meet eligibility criteria and are approved for the BICIS program can apply for a Travel Grant to the value of A$1,000. Any student participating in a second short term international experience (such as the European Summer School of Advanced Management, ESSAM) may be eligible to receive a subsequent grant. For more information on eligibility criteria, please click here.

All students who meet the criteria below will be eligible to apply for a UniSA Travel Grant. This includes both off shore and onshore students:

Students who are citizens of the Peoples Republic of China either as on-shore international students or offshore students will not be eligible for the travel grant, as going to study in your home country is not considered an international experience.

We will send a list of successful applicants to UniSA International for travel grant assessment based on the above eligibility criteria after the completion of the BICIS application process. Successful applicants will be contacted directly by UniSA International in relation to the Travel Grant.

10. I am post-graduate but not an MBA student studying at UniSA, am I eligible to apply for BICIS?

Application for BICIS is open to Masters students from other post-graduate programs within the University that meet the MBA work experience requirements. Interested students who are studying in programs outside the MBA should attach a copy of their CV or resume with their application documents.

11. I am post-graduate but not an MBA student studying at UniSA. Will I get credit for attending BICIS?

Credit for BICIS for Masters of Management students has been approved by the Program Director in the School of Management. Students from all other Masters programs will need to seek approval from their Program Director before applying. A course statement for BICIS can be obtained from Nina Wang at nina.wang@unisa.edu.au .

12. BICIS is held for one week in Shanghai and one week in Beijing - what travel arrangements are organised for BICIS and how should I arrange my flights?

We recommend that you arrange your flights so that you fly into Shanghai and fly out of Beijing. If you intend to take part in the optional cultural tour to the Great Wall on Wednesday 25th April 2012, we suggest that you arrange for your flight home to be on Thursday 26th April 2012. Transport for the BICIS group from Shanghai to Beijing will be by overnight train in a first class sleeping carriage.

Some participants choose to arrive early, or stay on after the program is completed. This is up to individual participants, but UniSA cannot provide assistance with travel or other arrangements outside the formal program.

13. What will the accommodation be like in Shanghai and Beijing?

Accommodation for BICIS will typically be three star local hotels, and all effort will be made to arrange twin share rooms with private bathroom facilities for each participant. Single room occupancy is available at an additional charge.

At BICIS 2012, accommodation in Shanghai will be at the Er Yi Hotel and in Beijing will be Qi Lu Hotel.

14. "Most meals" will be included in the BICIS ancillary fee - what can I expect?

Both hotels in Shanghai and Beijing serve a Chinese-style Western buffet for breakfast.

Meals during lunch times will be held at restaurants and cafes nearby to the host University campuses and will vary between Western and Chinese styles.

The BICIS team will make arrangements for dinner at restaurants near the hotel where the group is staying. Alternatively, participants can make their own dinner arrangements. Dinners are usually banquet-style with the opportunity to sample local Chinese delicacies. Vegetarians will be catered for.

15. I notice in the BICIS timetable there are some optional cultural tours. I have been to the Great Wall before, do I have to take part in the tours?

Some tours have been built into the BICIS timetable to enhance students' appreciation and understanding of Chinese culture. Every student is expected to take part in these activities as part of the BICIS program. To give students a chance to take a closer look at China, there are some opportunities for optional cultural visits, e.g. a day trip to a Summer Palace or to the Great Wall. Tour arrangements for these activities (at group rates) will be made in China at the additional cost to the participant. Time has been built into the program for these activities. We would ask participants to advise as early as possible of their intention to participate, or otherwise, in these optional tours.

16. I have business partners/friends in Beijing, can I arrange meetings with them while I am in China for BICIS?

The two week BICIS program is intensive and most students find their free time is absorbed doing group work and presentation preparation. If meetings with business partners need to be arranged then we suggest that the time allocated for the optional cultural tours be utilised for this purpose. Alternatively, students may arrive in Shanghai earlier or depart from Beijing later than the rest of the group.

17. Will I have access to the internet when in China?

Yes, broadband and wireless internet connections are available in the hotels in Shanghai and Beijing. We recommend that you bring an internet cable with you.

18. Does the University provide any travel insurance cover for students studying overseas?

As a student of the University of South Australia travelling as part of your coursework, you may be covered under UniSA's travel insurance policy. However, if you add any personal travel to this trip, you must contact this office with the details (dates etc) so you can be advised whether the insurance will still cover you. Please refer to the
following websites for further information:

http://www.unisa.edu.au/fin/insurance/faqstravelinsurance.asp

The UniSA Insurance Officer is Rae Barclay, and she can be contacted at: raelene.barclay@unisa.edu.au  or by phone at: +61 8 8302 1678.

19. How do I apply for a VISA for China?

We suggest that you approach your travel agent to arrange for your VISA to China. Most students in the past have travelled under a 'L' or Tourist-type VISA.

To apply for a VISA your travel agent will most likely ask you to complete an application form and attach a passport photo.

20. Does the University recommend any particular travel agents to use for booking travel to China for BICIS?

As part of the University's duty of care to travelling students, FlightLock was introduced. This is a software solution which centrally captures all travel bookings staff or students of the University have made through UniSA's two preferred travel agents, and any subsequent changes to itineraries by the traveller or airline. This information can only be captured via the travel agents that UniSA has contracts with. Importantly it continues to update itinerary information when the traveller or airline alters the initial booking. Although it is your responsibility to book your own flights at the dates and times convenient to you, we strongly recommend you use UniSA's preferred travel agents:
