CAB hosts international symposium -
"Growth and Integration in Asia: Monetary,
Financial and Trade Issues and Challenges" The Centre for Asian Business hosted the international symposium, "Growth and Integration in Asia: Monetary, Financial and Trade Issues and Challenges", 8-9 July 2011. This event was co-sponsored by Tokyo's Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI), with support from the Centre for Emerging Markets Policies (CEMP) at Washington's George Mason University, Singapore's Institute for Southeast Asian Studies, and the School of Commerce, UniSA. The symposium included presentations from delegates from around the world including the University of California, the National University of Singapore, the University of St Andrews, the University of Auckland, Edith Cowan University, and LaTrobe University as well as the sponsoring institutions. The symposium also included a lunch address by Dr Guy Debelle, Assistant Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia (reported by the Sydney Morning Herald) and researchers at the Lowy Institute. On 8 July 2011, a public lecture was delivered by 1996 Nobel Prize Winner, Professor Sir James Mirrlees, on "The Moral Hazard Problem". The papers and presentations delivered at the symposium were of excellent quality, and inspired engaging discussion in each session. These presentations and discussions contributed solidly to debate surrounding the issue of global trade and macroeconomic imbalances, and of capital flows and exchange rate regimes in Asia. The organisers would like to thank all the participants for what was a very productive conference and they would also like to thank Erin Leggat, Centre Administrator for the Centre for Asian Business for an outstanding job in ensuring all went smoothly over the two days. 15 July 2011 |

CAB hosts book launch On 29 July 2011 the Centre for Asian Business (IGSB) and the Centre for Human Resource Management (School of Management) hosted the official launch of The Dynamics of Asian Labour Markets: Balancing Control and Flexibility, a new book authored by Professor John Benson and Professor Ying Zhu, published by Routledge. The book fills a major research gap by exploring the nature, dynamics and functioning of Asian labour markets in eight Asian economies, including Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Vietnam, India and Malaysia. It examines the type of labour markets that exist in Asia; how they have responded to globalisation; and how flexible they are to changing social and economic conditions. The book analyses how the current transformation has impacted on the key parties, such as employers, employees, trade unions, governments, organisations and society as a whole, and considers the likely future trends and developments in Asian labour markets. Speakers at the event included Professor Carol Kulik, Professor Gerry Griffin, and Professor Keith Hancock, a leading commentator on Labour Market policy in Australia. Professor Hancock was the third Vice Chancellor of Flinders University, and one of its three original professors, in Economics. He later held the offices of Deputy President and Senior Deputy President at the Australian Industrial Relations Commission, and is now a Professorial Fellow in the National Institute of Labour Studies, Flinders University, and an Honorary Visiting Fellow in the School of Economics, University of Adelaide, where he is studying aspects of the regulation and deregulation of the labour market. 11 July 2011 |

Article published in trong>em>International Journal of Public
Opinion Research Dr Kesten Green's paper titled, 'Predicting elections from politicians' faces', in the International Journal of Public Opinion Research has just been made available for advance access. A link to the paper is available from the Forecasting Principles site within the news column. Dr Green and co-authors Professor J. Scott Armstrong (Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania), Randall Jones Jr. (University of Central Oklahoma), and Professor Malcolm Wright (UniSA) supported earlier research findings that people's snap judgments of candidates' competence influence their voting decisions. In this case the judgements were made by high school girls and other participants who did not recognize the candidates after briefly looking at images of the faces of potential candidates for the President of the United States in the 2008 election. As many as 15 months before the election, the facial competence ratings predicted that John McCain would beat rivals who were ranked much higher in the polls for the Republican nomination and that Clinton and Obama were likely Democrat nominees and would beat McCain in the election. While there is no evidence that people who look more competent are in fact more competent than others and other influences on voters' decisions might prevail on election day when voter involvement is high, the findings imply that political parties would do best to choose candidates who look competent. 5 November 2010 |

Nurture your own skilled staff,
author advises Organisations will need to "develop leadership from within" as global competition for skilled workers increases, including skilled migrants, the principal of Adelaide firm Corporate Education Advisers, Lindsay Ryan says. "This means greater emphasis on workforce planning, especially for leadership and frontline roles," he says. Ryan, the author of Corporate Education: a Practical Guide to Effective Corporate Learning (Griffin Press, 2010), says managing and developing a pipeline of skilled and capable employees will enable organisations to grow in the knowledge that they possesses the appropriate skills and talent. "Organisational development usually has a medium-to-longer term outlook with an emphasis on problem solving, renewal and developing organisational capability and capacity," he says. Ryan, a former director of the University of South Australia's corporate education unit, says the benefits of effective organisational development include greater depth of talent and skills, improved functional performance, more effective planning and decision-making and more capable leadership skills.
