What is Metadata?

Return to: ISTS FAQ Home > Applications > Corporate web

Metadata is data about data. Metadata is used to add context and meaning to information. For example: 5070 is a number that has no meaning without a context; if the metadata "postcode" is defined then the number takes on a meaning.

In terms of your web pages, metadata is additional descriptive information about the page or elements on the page. The metadata helps to provide a context for web search engine databases and the people using the pages. Typical metadata for a web page might include keywords, a description, author, date of update, alternate names and other information.

By including metadata in your web pages, you can simplify the task of managing your web pages and you can help other people find your pages.
