Science Experience at UniSA
12-14 January 2010
UniSA once again hosted the annual Science Experience
(previously known as Siemens Science Experience), an event for students
commencing year 10. A three day event this year held January 12-14, students with an interest in science were given a taste of life at
University as well as exposure to different areas of science study and
career opportunities.
Students from all over the state, enjoyed three fun filled days of hands on
science related activities and presentations at UniSAs City East and Mawson
Lakes campuses. Activities included making sun cream, taking x-rays and
ultrasound images, visiting the planetarium, using science to catch a
criminal, IT networking, building a sustainable environment and fun with
electronics.
As a joint venture with Rotary, students paid a small fee for the event or
obtained sponsorship through their local Rotary club. Current UniSA student
ambassadors hosted the students and gave insider tips about studying at
UniSA in science related fields. On completion, students commented that they
had a great time, learnt a lot of new things about science as well as the
career and study opportunities available after school and were motivated to
continue with science at high school
Activities in the 2009 UniSA program included:
- Planetarium
- Fun with Electronics
- EcoCentre Tour
- Experience nursing
- Slip Slop Slap, Make Your Own Sun Screen
- Pharmacy and Medical Sciences
- Using Science to Catch Criminals
- LEDs, Lasers, Optical Fibres and CD players
This is what some of the 2009 participating students thought.....
"Of
the many activities at the Science Experience my favourite would have to be
the Eco Centre Tour where we got to hold native reptiles such as the
long-necked turtle, a python, stumpy-tailed and blue-tongued lizards. I
found the information on the effect of introduced species on native animals
to be very interesting, along with the destruction of native habitat.
Particularly the situation of the long-necked turtle which is being
threatened by short necked rival. Although this was my favourite, all
the activities were a blast." Krystal, Fremont Elizabeth High School.
"Showcased many science careers." Trevor, Eynesbury College.
"The experience was excellent and I learnt a lot!" Monique, Craigmore Christian School.

"It opened my eyes to many career options. Great experience I would recommend it to other students." Ellen-Marie, Modbury High School.
"I am looking into science as a career and this helped. Great experience that should be heard about in more schools." Kate, Xavier College.
The Science Experience is open to Year 9 students entering Year 10 and runs annually in January school holidays.
Application forms are available at www.scienceexperience.com.au or from your local Rotary Club. There is a small fee to participate, students are encouraged to approach their local Rotary club for sponsorship
