"The Wark's vacation scholarship provided me with a unique insight into
the nature of research and development in the material sciences sector.
Throughout my time with The Wark, I was designated an individual research
project in which I was able to develop a novel method for the production of
gold nanoparticles. The research was undertaken whilst working in world
class facilities and having the opportunity to use state-of-the-art
equipment. In doing so, I was able to use the fundamental knowledge that I
obtained throughout my studies and developed key skills that are useful in
the research sector. This experience was extremely valuable to me as it gave
me a taste of what performing a PhD at The Wark will be like, which I will
be commencing this year."

"My experience as a vacation student at the Ian Wark Research Institute was
wonderful as well as memorable. Although it was just a mere 9 weeks spent
there, The Wark provided me valuable insight on the mineral processing world
and the nature of laboratory work. Although I had several difficulties
during the initial stages of my experiment, the support of the academics and
staff over at The Wark was very professional and helpful and the resources
available were immense. I will gladly return to The Wark to complete my 4th
year research project if given the opportunity".
Le Woei (Aaron) Ng, 3rd year, Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical), University

"As a Bachelor of Science student, the summer vacation project at The Wark
has provided valuable experience of life at a research facility, and the
trials and tribulations that accompany this. My involvement as part of an
ongoing research project with a team has given me priceless practice in the
area of team research, and I have learnt a wealth of knowledge in the areas
of polymer science that I hope to use in my future endeavours. I would
definitely consider completing part of my degree at this institution in the
future".
Iain Dickson, 2nd year, Bachelor of Science (Physics) / Bachelor of
Education, University of South Australia
2009-10 Recipients
"Summer vacation employment in The Wark has been an amazing and rewarding
experience. I have had the opportunity to work with, and be guided by, some
of the best researchers in Australia. Research is very hands on and I was
trained in state-of-the-art equipment like the Acoustosizer that most PhD
students could only dream about. I have no doubt that this is certainly the
most productive summer I've ever had"!

"The Wark's vacation scholarships provide a unique opportunity for
undergraduate students to grow out from the traditional cookbook based
learning approach and experience the taste of research work with real world
application in world class laboratories. Through this research experience, I
have enhanced my academic knowledge and better understand the concept and
importance of professional research".
