Background
Dr Craig Priest has extensive experience studying the wettability of tailored interfaces and fluid control in microfluidic devices. He received his PhD in 2005 from the University of South Australia for his thesis on the wettability of chemically patterned surfaces. He has since extended this work to reveal more details about the role of microscopic roughness on wetting and, particularly, wetting hysteresis. In his postdoctoral position at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organisation in Goettingen, Germany, he expanded his research to include droplet-based microfluidic systems. He demonstrated the viability of microfluidic generation, manipulation, and coalescence of nanolitre droplets at high dispersed-phase volume fractions, where the droplet arrangements are spatially controlled by interfacial tension and the channel geometry.

In his present position as Research Fellow at The Wark, he is focused on the role of functional interfaces in controlling liquid samples within microfluidic channels and developing new opportunities for exploiting microfluidic devices to drive process intensification in industry. In 2012, he was appointed as Deputy Director of the South Australian Node of the Australian National Fabrication Facility.

Craig is regularly involved in community activities and has written articles for InDaily and SA Mines and Energy Magazine. He was a successful nominee to the national competition for science communication, Fresh Science (2009), and was awarded the Early Career Researcher - Tall Poppy of the Year Award at the South Australian Science Excellence Awards in 2011. He is currently a member of the South Australian Government's Premier's Science and Industry Council, the Access Committee for the South Australian node of the Australian National Fabrication Facility, and is an elected member of the Executive Policy and Planning Committee of the Ian Wark Research Institute (UniSA).
