Background
Xiaokong Liu studied chemistry at Jilin University, Changchun, China, where he obtained a Bachelor in Chemical Engineering in 2005 and a PhD in Polymer Chemistry and Physics in 2010. During March to September in 2010, he worked in the Max-Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Germany as an international PhD student. Xiaokong joined The Wark in January 2011.

Xiaokong's research during his PhD mainly focused on the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly and functionalization, including: i) polymeric complexes as building blocks for the rapid fabrication of functional LbL assembled films; ii) synthesis of star-shaped polyelectrolytes using atom transfer radical polymerization method and LbL assembly of the star-shaped polyelectrolyte complexes. iii) LbL adsorption and reaction method for the fabrication of lanthanide phosphate nanocrystals.
