UniBreak Placements

UniBreak placements allow you to travel overseas, gain valuable personal and professional experience and make a modest contribution to a developing community.  Placements run for 4 weeks or more.

UN Youth SA Kofi Trophy 2012

Are you interested in international affairs and Diplomacy? Do you like debating? Are you keen to improve your speaking and negotiation skills? Want to win $200 prize money?

This year, UN Youth SA is running the Kofi Trophy Tertiary Model United Nations Security Council Debating Competition. The Kofi Trophy invites teams of two delegates to represent one of the 15 member states of the security council. It seeks out strong speakers, persuasive negotiators and outstanding diplomats. It's a great way to gain an understanding of the challenges of the United Nations and international politics, meet new people, and have some fun!

WHEN: Council 1 Heats will be held at 6:30pm on Wednesday 2 May and Wednesday 16 May. Council 2 Heats will be held on Wednesday 9 May and Wednesday 23 May. The top fifteen teams from the two heats will be selected to compete in the Grand Finals at 6:30pm on Wednesday 30 May, and find themselves in the running to win $200 prize money!

WHERE: All rounds will be held at the Conference Room, Christian Brothers College, 214 Wakefield St, Adelaide.

 Connecting with Law Short Film Competition 2012

Now in it's fifth year, the Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is open to all students currently enrolled in an Australian law school. To enter, choose at least one definition from the Australian Law Dictionary, from Oxford University Press, and create a 2-5 minute film based around the definition/s that will educate and help students connect with the law.

Projects Abroad - overseas law and human rights internships and volunteer programmes

Projects Abroad offers law students the opportunity to work on international human rights and commercial law programmes in several developing countries such as Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, China, Mongolia and Cambodia.

Projects Abroad programmes are available throughout the year, for varying durations; some programmes are eligible to contribute toward your Global Experience Suite and you may even be entitled to a Global Experience Travel Grant.

Researcher Position: Senior Counsel (Equity and Succession) and Junior Counsel (General Practice)

A researcher is required to assist Senior Counsel (Equity and Succession and the texts in respect of Succession) and a Junior Counsel (General Practice). The applicant must be in either third or fourth year law and must be available during university term on Tuesday and Friday of each week and before university commences on Thursdays and Fridays.

The Young Workers' Legal Service Volunteer Program 2012

The Young Workers' Legal Service (YWLS) provides workers under the age of 30 with free, confidential advice about work-related matters, such as unfair dismissal, the underpayment of wages, equal opportunity and discrimination, bullying and harassment and training disputes. The Service is staffed by volunteer law students who work under the supervision of industrial officers from SA Unions.

The YWLS is currently taking on legal volunteers to be involved in providing these services under their program, to commence in February 2012.

DFEEST Defence Scholarship 2012

The Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST) is offering an honours scholarship for 2012 - the Defence Scholarship. The scholarship provides financial assistance towards the cost of the honours program and is available to students undertaking a defence-related honours degree or degree with honours at the University of South Australia, Flinders University or the University of Adelaide. Each scholarship is for $5000 for one year full-time study, payable in two instalments subject to the student maintaining satisfactory academic progress and full-time load.

 GDLP Placement at the Legal Advice Clinic

The Legal Advice Clinic is accepting applications from UniSA students wanting to do their placement (or part of their placement) at the Clinic for the professional experience component of their Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

At the Clinic you will be provided with the opportunity to further develop your legal skills in a variety of areas.  The Clinic provides free legal advice and assistance on a wide range of matters to the general community.  Since we have commenced operation, the Clinic has provided advice and assistance to over 300 people on matters including criminal, tenancies, family law, and civil litigation .

You will be able to interview clients and provide advice and assistance under the close supervision of a legal practitioner.  The provision of advice will be done orally and in writing and this gives you an excellent opportunity to further develop your communication, legal drafting, and writing skills.

Placement at the Clinic will also help you to develop your understanding of the different services and stakeholders in the legal system.  Such knowledge will serve you well irrespective of what path you take in your career.

Maggie Yarak has been a facilitator and lecturer in the GDLP program for the Law Society and Flinders University for the last 4 years in the Corporate and Commercial Unit and Property Unit. She commenced in house practice in 2008 and before that worked in private firms in Adelaide specialising in commercial litigation.

GDLP placements are hard to get for many students and Maggie would like to offer her in house department as an option. They deal with mainly business law, corporate law and litigation, property law and management, intellectual property, consumer law and franchising law.
