Social
networking on the Internet has made everyone a publisher. With the click
of a finger our thoughts are shared publicly from the comfort of our
armchair, providing a false sense of privacy. When online chatrooms have
become the modern pub, can't we say whatever we like? Not exactly.
Defamation via Facebook is as easy as virtual pie and users of such social networking sites need to be careful that they observe the law.
This presentation will explore the law of defamation in relation to Facebook, including the recent South Australian case where criminal defamation charges were brought instead of a civil action. Status update: convicted.
