UniSA's Guiding principles for Online learning

During 2010 - 2011 UniSA is implementing a new Personal Learning Environment. This encompasses three discreet but overlapping projects focussed on the development of:

  • a new Program and Course Management System

  • a new Student Placement System

  • UniSA's new learning management system - learnonline, which will be used to support online delivery of teaching. learnonline has Moodle at its core. Other tools and software applications are integrated with Moodle to enhance the online learning experience for students. All current UniSAnet course websites will be migrated and converted to learnonline by December 2011.

To ensure the best learning outcomes for all students the following principles guide the use of learnonline at UniSA.

These principles are also guided by the following policies:
Code of Good Practice: Student Behaviour
Code of Ethical conduct
Acceptable Use of Information Technology (IT) facilities
Guidelines for students on use of IT facilities, including email and the internet
Guidelines on Electronic Communications with Students
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines

 

Guiding Principles

1. learnonline will be UniSA's primary environment for delivering and engaging students with online teaching and learning.
learnonline includes a learning management system (Moodle) and a number of other tools to ensure an integrated online experience for students.

2. All UniSA courses will have a learnonline presence.
learnonline will facilitate student access to Course Information booklets and the University's standard course and teacher feedback instruments.

3. Staff using learnonline will be fully supported:1.
UniSA staff using learnonline to deliver teaching content will be supported by the IT help desk, online advisers and academic developers. Online help resources will also be available.

4. UniSA staff and students will be encouraged to develop innovative online practices.
The development and trialling of innovative online practices will be supported by the University though the TTAG (the Teaching and Technology Advisory Group).

5. Students will undertake all summative assessment tasks within the learnonline environment.
learnonline will support the administration and completion of interactive assessment activities as well as the electronic submission of assessment tasks (Assessment Policy and Procedures Manual 1.2.5f).

6. UniSA encourages the sharing of good teaching practices and collaborative teaching.
learnonline will encourage the sharing of good teaching practices and collaborative teaching. All staff will have read only access to all online material in all courses with the exception of discussions, quizzes and other interactive activities.

7. All material available through learnonline will be copyright compliant.
All files uploaded to learnonline will indicate their copyright status. It is the academic's responsibility to ensure that material published via learnonline and the lecture recording system is copyright compliant.

8. Students can expect access via learnonline to recordings (audio and presentation) of lectures conducted in a main lecture theatre:
Lecture recording will be automatic (based on timetable lectures) and academics will be required to 'opt-out' if they do not want to have their lectures recorded automatically.

9. Students will have access to course material for courses they have been enrolled in for a minimum of 12 months after the completion of that study period.
As an active, enrolled student at UniSA, students will be able to access course material.

10. All course material software will comply with accessibility requirements
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential . UniSA is working towards W3C AA accessibility guidelines:2.
