Middle East in Revolt: The First Anniversary

17-18 March 2012, The University of Melbourne

This conference marks the first anniversary of the Arab revolutions. Throughout 2011 popular protests swept the Middle East as the region’s citizens demanded political change, accountability and reform. While many observers have drawn parallels with the crumbling of the Soviet bloc, the outcome of the Arab uprisings is far from clear. It may be premature to celebrate the ‘Arab Spring’ as heralding democracy to the region. This ground-breaking international conference draws together a range of global experts in a forum for reflection on a year that has changed history.

Gilbert will be taking up the title of South Australia Research Fellow from 31 March 2012 when his project begins. The project is an investigation into ways in which expressions of Islamophobia interact with perceptions of Muslim misogyny. It has an alliterative title: Borders, Burqas and Babies. Gilbert has been with the MnM Centre since its beginning and all at the centre are very pleased for him. Well done Gilbert.
